Day 11: Compassion
Rooted in Presence
MIN. PAUL HYPOLITE, JR.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
– Psalm 34:18 NIV
The verse highlights God’s nearness: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.” Compassion is not
distant or indifferent; it is present, engaged, and personal. God’s closeness models our being near
those who are hurting—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. It calls us to practice
being attentive and available to others, embodying the same empathy God shows.
The second part of the verse states: “and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” God’s
compassion isn’t passive—it moves into action, offering rescue, restoration, and hope. This
reminds us that genuine compassion goes beyond feelings of sympathy; it seeks to bring healing
and relief, even in small ways.
This verse promises hope for the brokenhearted and crushed in spirit. It assures us that we
are not alone, even in sorrow. God sees, hears, and acts. This hope fuels our capacity to extend
compassion even when life feels overwhelming.
As we seek to draw nearer to God during our fast, I pray that we understand that being
vulnerable in our brokenness may be the best time for God’s presence to show His compassion.
I was highly broken because of the deaths of my mother at the age of 54 and my brother at the
age of 26. I do not doubt that the compassionate presence of God is the main reason I am still
standing and serving God and God’s people. Allow God to do the same for you.
