Day 36: Protected…
No Matter What
REV. MARLA C. HAWKINS
“You who live in the shelter of the Most High,Who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,Will say to the
Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; My God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the
fowler And from the deadly pestilence; He will cover you with his pinions, **And under his wings you will
find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler.”
– Psalm 91:1-4 NRSV
Psalm 91 is often referred to as “the soldier’s psalm,” referring to God’s protection in
times of crisis. Our key verse four, reminds us that we will always be protected by our
God, no matter what, because His faithfulness toward us is our shield and buckler.
At the beginning of my teaching career, I was declared, “surplus” due to a drop in
student enrollment. When the school year ended, I did not have a job for the upcoming
school year. This was my first teaching job after graduating from college, and navigating
this dilemma seemed almost impossible. Where could I go to find another teaching job
elsewhere and without travel funds?
Believing in God’s unfailing love, I worked many odd jobs as I sought God’s answer. After
one year, I received a message to re-apply to the school system and was granted a fulltime teaching position. I can only declare that God’s protection keeps us.
PRAYER
Dear God, help us trust your protection.
